Do you need to find statistical data, and don’t know where to start? Our library staff at the Maps, Official Publications and Statistics Unit are here to help you with your research.
The data we hold
Statistical data can bring your research to life. We can help you find data on a wide range of topics, such as weather, tourism, population, society, and economics. Hover over, or tap, the images to see some examples.
Statistical data for use in academic research must be reliable and accurate. Our collections contain official statistics obtained by and for governments and international organisations, such as the International Monetary Fund and the United Nations.
Official statistics adhere to a high level of standards in methodology, quality, trustworthiness, and value. The Office for National Statistics, for example, works with the UK Statistics Authority’s Code of Practice.
We’re experienced in locating the reliable official statistics you can count on for your studies.
Using data in research
It can be difficult to know where to start with finding and extracting relevant statistical data. Perhaps the data you’ve found doesn’t cover the right time period, or doesn’t contain the level of detail needed.
Our enquiry staff are familiar with these issues and can advise. Sometimes a government department is absorbed by another that continues to collect the data, or a different organisation holds the data in a more suitable format.
Who we are
The Maps, Official Publications and Statistics Unit provides help in using our collections. Items in our collections tend to be a bit more difficult to locate, and we therefore have a specialist enquiry service and college librarian ready to help. We can show you how to locate the data you need, and how to use our collections to research more successfully.
