Westminster and the UK Government
A decision on the role of women in ground close combat roles is expected from the Government this summer. Following a review of the policy in 2014, it is expected that the exclusion on women serving in close combat will be lifted. The House of Commons library have published a research briefing on Women in Combat, based on the 2014 review.
The House of Commons Library has published a Select Bibliography on Domestic Violence, which includes library papers, official sources, other literature, and useful websites on this subject.
On the 1st of March the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee held an evidence session on EU membership and UK science, as part of their inquiry into the relationship between EU membership and the effectiveness of UK science, research and innovation. The session can be seen on Parliament TV.
The European Union
The Women’s Rights and Gender Equality Committee of the European Parliament has produced a study into Female refugees and asylum seekers: the issue of integration. The study looks into the legislation and policies surrounding female refugees and asylum seekers, examining housing, training and language courses, the labour market, healthcare and gender based violence.
The Committee has also produced a range of material related to International Women’s Day 2016, including a document Women refugees and asylum seekers in the EU: Current legislation and situation at national level.
Gender mainstreaming in the EU: State of Play is an At a Glance document by the European Parliament’s Think Tank on the EU policy to try and achieve gender equality established in 1996. It discusses how the policy works, how it has been implemented and analyses whether it has been successful.
The official text of the Agreed Settlement for the United Kingdom within the European Union was published in the Official Journal on the 23rd February.
The Scottish Parliament and Government
The Scottish Government’s strategy 2016-2026 on Pregnancy and Parenthood in Young People was published this month. It concentrates on addressing support for young parents through pregnancy and into parenthood.
The Scottish Government has an open consultation running until the 1st of April 2016 on A Criminal Offence of Domestic Abuse. The consultation asks stakeholders for their views on the creation of the offence of domestic abuse, the sentence and the defences.
The Scottish Local Government Financial Statistics 2014-15 have just been published. (Previous issues can be found on the Scottish Government website) This annual publication covers all areas of Local Authority spending.
Office for National Statistics
The Department for Education have published Childcare and early years survey of parents: 2014 to 2015 which provides time-series data on types of childcare provision, and parental choices and experiences on using of childcare in their local area and decisions on whether to work.
Pocket databank: economic indicators is published by HM Treasury on a monthly basis, and contains economic statistics for the UK and the world including inflation, output, consumer indicators, balance of payments, GDP, and interest rates.
