Over the Christmas holidays Westlaw International will become International Materials, part of the US WestlawNext platform! At the moment you can access both through the Services tab on the menu bar at the top of the Westlaw UK home page – but from next week, Westlaw International will be removed and you will access all the content that you used to get from here by clicking on the International Materials tab. This post will give you a quick guide to the new look, new layout :
International Materials homepage
The new International Materials homepage has a single interface with a search box at the top and links to browse by jurisdiction or by document type. You can also do a search across all international material – but be careful you will be searching across a lot of material!
The search box at the top of the page stays there no matter where you are within International Materials but will default to the page you are on. For example if you go to the International Materials Index and use the search box, it will search only the index and so you need to pay attention to the grey text within the search box. The button next to it allows you to search for All Content but this is not just the content for International Materials but all of WestlawNext
Getting back to International Materials can be problematic because you cannot rely on using the back button on your browser (sometimes throws up an error message). The easiest way to get back to the homepage is to click on the bread crumb trial at the top. If you click on the WestlawNext logo you will find yourself on the WestlawNext home page which is primarily US materials – which you might want to get to most often!! If this happens all you need to do is to click on the link to International Materials on the right hand side.
If you normally use Westlaw International to access U.S. legal materials, you might wonder where this material has gone as its not immediately available from the International Materials homepage! From the International Materials screen click on the WestlawNext logo at the top of the screen – this is the U.S. platform for Westlaw and will take you to all the content you need!
This brings up the different options to browse. If you are looking for specifically looking for Federal or State materials – click on the tabs under Browse. If you are looking for journals or books then you need to choose Secondary Sources from the list on the All Content screen and then you can narrow down from there.
