International Volunteers’ Day

Hi! I am Betty from Masaryk University (Brno, Czech Republic) on a Erasmus working placement at the University of Glasgow Archive Services.

The International Volunteer Day we celebrate today was established on 5th of December by the United Nations in 1985 with aim of development partnerships between volunteers and organizations. It is an opportunity to celebrate volunteering.

Today volunteering at the University of Glasgow is represented by the Student Volunteer Support Service at the Students’ Representative Council and is part of heritage of the University as we can see from our Archive Collections.

The Glasgow University Settlement, originally called “Queen Margaret Collage Settlement Association” was founded in 1897 by a group of pioneering women struggled to the right to access higher education and dedicated to others whose needs were often disregarded.

The aim was to ‘promote the welfare of the poorer people, chiefly of the women and children, in a district or districts of Glasgow’ and it played a role in the development of social work training at the University.

We hold the records of the Glasgow University Queen Margaret Settlement Association and this collection contains various sources about volunteering dating from 1897 including history, annual reports, minute books, several articles and publications, correspondence and photographs. If you’re interested in looking at the collection (Ref: DC 022) then please contact us.

There are also other references to volunteering in our Scottish Business Archive collections. Many of them are again connected to military themes, with people volunteering for the Rifle Volunteers, Home Guard duty or later in the Territorial Army.  The example show below is from our records of William Younger & Co. Ltd who were brewers in Edinburgh.

Here at Archive Services we have benefited from working with volunteers in the past on our collections and today provide opportunities through the University’s Club 21 placement system. If you’d like to know more about the types of volunteering placements we offer then please read the case study about us or have a read of the blog posts created by our previous Club 21 placements.
