Ancestral research at Archive Services

Today at Archives we are very pleased to welcome two family historians from the United States of America.  David and Arthur are visiting Scotland on holiday, and are spending some of their time here tracing their ancestral history.

They are consulting the funeral order books of Wylie & Lochhead, one of Glasgow’s main undertakers since the 1830s.  Several of David and Arthur’s ancestors were buried by Wylie & Lochhead, so they were interested in seeing the information recorded about the burials in the order books.  They are also hopeful of tracing details of the funerals of other members of the family.

The funeral order books can often provide really interesting details about burials – from details of the carriage and the horses which pulled it, the funeral stationery, the refreshments served at the wake, and a reference for the cemetery and lair.  There’s also a code to decipher to discover the cost of the arrangements (fortunately we know how to crack it!)

We hope David and Arthur have a fantastic trip.
