Unusual finds in the Archive

Yesterday, one of our volunteers found this sketch of a Scottish Cup design in amongst our plans for Fleming & Ferguson Ltd, Shipbuilders based in Paisley. The material had been used to protect and wrap the ship plans.

Sketch of Scottish Cup

Sketch found in Fleming & Ferguson Plans

St Mirren didn’t win the Scottish Cup in 1961 but they did have a very high scoring replay match in the 3rd round on the 28th February 1961 against Third Lanark at Cathkin Park where an 8-0 victory put them through to the quarter finals.

The team names shown in the sketch match the players that were in the starting line up – Brown, Campbell, Wilson, Stewart, Clunie, Riddell, Rodger, Bryceland, Kerrigan, McTavish and Miller.

We are guessing that this is the work of a young apprentice at Fleming & Ferguson who perhaps enthused by the 8-0 victory allowed themselves to hope for victory in the Scottish Cup Final. It was not to be and Dunfermline Athletic knocked them out in a replay match in the semi-finals, going on to beat Celtic to take the Cup.

We are left wondering whether anyone knows the person who drew this sketch?

  1. Found just a day after St. Mirren did win the cup! (http://www.saintmirren.net/pages/?p=21788)
    What a coincidence!
