Today is National Libraries Day, and it marks the “culmination of a week’s worth of celebrations in school, college, university, workplace and public libraries across the UK.”
To celebrate this, Archives Services have unearthed these images in our collections of the University Library being built in 1965. It was designed by William Whitfield “he drew up initial sketches and models for the projected building in 1961. He wanted it to be a landmark to complement the tower of the main University building, designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott in 1865.”
Special Collections has lots more information about the history of the library building in their timeline and in this online exhibition they created in 2008 to mark the 40th anniversary of the library.
