Recipes for drinks in the archives

When working in the J G Thomson & Co Ltd collection recently, I came across two handwritten notebooks from the nineteenth century.  These notebooks, filled by Peter Dickson and Robert Hamilton, contain many recipes for various drinks – some with notes on the success, or otherwise, of the ingredients and method.

Peter Dickson’s recipe for cherry brandy dates to 1828, and Robert Hamilton’s Orange Bitters from the 1890s.

There is also a page with assorted cordial flavours in the Robert Hamilton recipe book.
