Small grants go far

Elva rolling plans Archive Services recently secured two awards through the Scottish Council on Archives (SCA) small grant scheme. We gained funding for our Showcasing the Archives and Clyde Shipbuilders – Preservation Packaging projects.

Showcasing the Archives will allow us to make a series of short films to promote the archive collections held by and the services offered by Archive Services. Working with the University’s Media Production Unit, we will produce films which provide guidance on locating and using archives for research, include a behind-the-scenes tour of Archive Services, provide techniques for caring for personal collections of family archives, and highlight some of our underused collections. The films will be available online, with dvds being sent to some targeted user groups. The films will be made towards the end of the summer, so keep an eye on our website at the start of next term.

Colin rolling plansWe have already completed our second SCA-funded project Clyde Shipbuilders – Preservation Packaging. Colin Waller and Elva McLean spent five weeks carefully repackaging around 700 ship plans from the archive of James Lamont & Co Ltd. This work, which saw the plans being rolled around tissue covered cardboard tubes then wrapped in protective Tyvek bags before being placed in telescopic boxes on the shelf, has greatly improved the prospects for the long-term preservation of these important and well-used records.
