Supporting Research

The Library has been successful in two bids for funding to JISC (the Joint Information Systems Committee).
  • The first project, Enrich, is a collaboration between the Library, Research and Enterprise, and IT services within the University and is looking at further development of our institutional repository, Enlighten.
  • The second project ERIS (Enhancing Repository Infrastructure in Scotland) is a collaboration with other universities in Scotland and this project will look at how institutional repositories can support researchers across Scotland.

The Library has also been heavily involved in the pilot of the Research Excellence Framework (REF), the successor to the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) which is the mechanism used to allocate research funding to universities. The REF may place a greater emphasis on bibliometrics – i.e. the number of times a researcher’s paper is cited by other researchers.

The University was required to provide lists of publications to the Higher Education Funding Council (HEFCE) to enable them to analyse citations and Library staff worked hard to compile these publications lists. We have received the results from the citation analysis and academic staff across the University are now evaluating the use of bibliometrics in research assessment.
