A new exhibition celebrating Scotland’s ‘masters of mirth’ opens at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery on Saturday 23 February 2013 and runs until 25 May 2014. Special Collections are delighted to lend some material from the Scottish Theatre Archive to the exhibition.
The exhibition pays tribute to a list of Scottish variety stars, comedians and actors, including Harry Lauder, Will Fyffe, Tommy Morgan, Rikki Fulton, Sir Stanley Baxter, Una McLean and Billy Connolly.
You can also enter the ‘On Air’ booths, where you can listen and watch comedy clips, and leave a recording of your own comedy performance!
The opening lecture on Sunday 24th February sees Johnny Beattie discuss his varied and eventful career and other ‘comedy greats’ with whom he has worked.
On Tuesday 2nd April Dr Paul Maloney, Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Glasgow will give an illustrated talk on the world of the Scottish music hall and the lives and careers of Scottish music hall performers.
If you are unable to make it through to Edinburgh you are welcome to visit the Special Collections Department and learn more about the stars featured in the exhibition.
