Special Collections is delighted that James McGonigal’s biography of the celebrated Scottish poet Edwin Morgan (1920-2010) has won the Saltire Society’s Research Book of the Year Award. Professor McGonigal has been a regular visitor to our reading room over the last few years, carrying out detailed investigations in Edwin Morgan’s personal archive. The collection, including scrapbooks, correspondence and drafts of poems, provided most of the source material for Beyond the Last Dragon: A Life of Edwin Morgan. In turn, the writer Liz Lochhead has described how McGonigal’s book served as inspiration for her recent play about Morgan, Dreams and other Nightmares.
Although access to the archive is currently by appointment only, a project is underway to produce a detailed online catalogue. More on this soon.
