The exhibition explores how emblem books developed throughout Europe during the sixteenth century onwards, their decline and subsequent revival in the Victorian Age and the ways in which they have influenced literature and the visual arts in the modern world.  Items from our Stirling Maxwell collection of emblem and device literature feature prominently as it is the largest collection of its kind anywhere in the world, consisting of around 2000 volumes!

Additional material from this collection is also now on display in the foyer showcase on Level 12 of the library and all are welcome to come along and view it.  This display focuses on Sir William Stirling Maxwell himself, who amassed this great library of emblem literature.
