Our Map Galleries highlight a number of significant items from the map collections using high resolution zoomable images. The latest addition is a selection of indexes to the County Series of the Ordnance Survey. The County Series of Scotland was the first comprehensive mapping of Scotland in a single survey. From the late 1840s through the 1870s the country was mapped at a scale of six inches to the mile.
A complete collection of the County Series of Scotland is available to view in the Maps, Official Publications and Statistics Unit of the library.
Other galleries include a collection of privately surveyed maps of Glasgow and its surroundings dating from 1778 to 1828, and a collection of Ordnance Survey mapping of Glasgow dating from 1865 to 1956. All of the original maps in these galleries can be viewed on level 7 of the library.
We can also provide high quality reproductions of any of the maps in the galleries. You can find details on our Reproduction Services web page.
If you have any questions about the map collections of the library feel free to visit us on level 7 or contact us by email, phone or post.
