The Scottish Parliament general election will be held on Thursday 5th of May. This will be the fourth general election since the formation of the devolved Scottish Parliament in 1999.
You can find information on the main parties involved and their manifestos on their official websites by clicking on the following links:-

There is also a display on level 7 of the library explaining the electoral system used in Scotland, and listing some of the key party manifesto pledges.
This Thursday also sees a referendum vote on potential changes to the United Kingdom voting system. At present the UK uses the ‘first past the post’ system to elect MPs to the House of Commons. The Alternative Vote system (AV) will replace this should the referendum return a ‘yes’ vote.
If the AV system still seems a mystery to you there is a display on level 7 which clearly explains how it works in comparison to the current system. You can also find a great deal of information on the AV Referendum, and the Scottish Parliament Election, on the Electoral Commission website.
If you have any questions about the Scottish or United Kingdom Parliaments feel free to visit the Maps, Official Publications and Statistics Unit in person or contact us by phone, post or email.
