This week’s gem from the Stoddard-Templeton Design Archive is a small collection of Art Nouveau wallpaper samples (STOD/DES/123/2).
Printed on the reverse of each sample are the design’s reference number and its price per yard. These range from 9d to 3s 6d, which would be the equivalent to £2.25 to £10.48 in today’s money, thus a significant investment and clearly aimed at a wealthier clientèle. Yet these seem relatively cheap when compared to one from the William Morris Collection (STOD/DES/123/3/2), which was priced at 110/- per piece (£329.40).
These samples were collected by carpet manufacturers to keep up to date with the latest interior design trends and to act as inspiration for their own design departments.
