Did you know? Newspapers

The library holds a selection of daily newspapers on Level 3 of the Main Library. On display is The Times, The Scotsman, The Independent, The Herald, Guardian and Financial Times.  They are held for three months in paper form and are located on the shelves to the left of the Newspaper table. They can be used at any time and by anyone in the library.

If you are looking for further archives of the newspapers or just wish to view them online all holdings have been clearly listed on our Online Newspapers page. Please note that you will need a valid GUID account to view some of these resources.

We also hold archives of other Newspapers such as the Le Monde, The Times/Sunday Times , Glasgow Herald in CD-Rom. These items can only be viewed on a networked  CD-Rom machine which has recently been re-located to inside the Short Loan area on Level 2 of the Main Library. Please speak to the staff on The Welcome Desk on Level 2 if your wish to view any of these items.

Microfilm copies of newspapers can also be found in the Microfilm Collection on Level 4 of Main Library. Readers are located in the room with the microfilm  and if any help is needed using the machines the staff in Book processing Unit are happy to help. They are located on level 3 of the Main Library opposite the Photo Copy Room.

If you have any comments, questions or suggestions about any of the above please let us know!

  1. It might be useful for people to know that the Language Centre Library subscribes to:
    Libération
    Novaya Gazeta
    El Pais
    Publica
    Repubblica
    Süddeutsche Zeitung

We retain copies for 1-2 months. We also subscribe to a variety of foreign magazines.

  2. Thanks Matt, I’ve updated the post with the Microfilm info!

  3. Shouldn’t some mention be made of the fact that we also hold many of these titles (and some others) in microfilm format? Although the majority of these are now held in the Library Research Annexe, some (the Glasgow Herald in particular) are held in the microfilm room on level 4 of the library. I mention the Herald as it is only held from 1998 onwards in electronic format, whereas the microfilm goes back as far as 1783.
