  • Are juries fair? – A research report examining whether all-white juries discriminate against black and minority ethnic defendants by Professor Cheryl Thomas, for Ministry of Justice
  • Evidence Check 2: Homeopathy: HC Science and Technology Committee (HC 45) – report concludes that the NHS should cease funding homeopathy
  • Treating Injury and Illness Arising on Military Operations: National Audit Office (HC 294) – report finds the clinical treatment and rehabilitation of service personnel seriously injured on military operations to be highly effective, but notes that the rate of illness and minor injury among personnel on operations has almost doubled in three years 
  • Guide on law applicable to contractual obligations (Rome I) - Min of Justice – A guide to the main provisions in the European Community Regulation on the law applicable to contractual obligations (Rome I), which came into force on 17 December 2009
  • Unemployment by constituency, January 2010 (House of Commons Research Paper 10/13) – paper shows the number of people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance recorded as resident in each constituency in the United Kingdom in January 2010, together with comparisons with the levels in January 2009 and January 1997. Residence-based unemployment rates are given for all 646 constituencies in the United Kingdom. It includes unemployment rates by constituency maps and an annual percentage change map, as well as a summary of the latest labour market data.

    Holyrood news 

  • Alcohol etc. (Scotland) Bill (SPICe Briefing 10-13) – this new bill is part of the government’s plan to reduce harm caused by alcohol in Scotland. However, the proposed changes to pricing policies has not been received favourably, so evidence was sought from academics, health professionals and those within the alcohol industry.
  • Barriers to widening access to higher education (SPICe Briefing 10-07) – paper looks at some of the reasons why people do not enter into higher education, either after leaving school or at a point later in life.
  • Mapping the recession (SPICe Briefing 10-16) – mapping and tabular data showing changes in house prices and sales, and changes in employment rates and claimant counts
  • Participation in higher education: statistics (SPICe Briefing 10-08) – statistics of numbers participating in higher education in Scotland and England and a comparison against OECD countries. Also provides data relating to mode of study and country of domicile, at undergraduate and postgraduate level
  • Preventing Overweight and Obesity in Scotland: A Route Map Towards Healthy Weight – new plan from the Government to prevent obesity, as Scotland currently has the highest levels of obesity in OECD countries
  • Respite Care, Scotland 2009 (final figures) – data for respite care provided, at local authority level
  • Scottish Survey of Achievement- Reading and Writing – a National Statistics publication showing results of a sample survey of how well pupils are learning to read and write
  • Statistical Release: Crime and Justice Series: Homicide in Scotland, 2008-09 – latest figures show number of homicides recorded in Scotland by the Police Forces. During this period there were 16 less homicides compared to the previous year.
  • Widening access to higher education: Policy in Scotland (SPICe Briefing 10-09) – Briefing paper which lays out the policies in place to try to increase participation in higher education by widening access
  • Unemployment – January 2010 (SPICe Briefing 10-15) – latest data on unemployment across Scotland, by Scottish Parliamentary Constituency area. Shows increase or decrease on claimant count since last update
