Work has begun on making the University of Glasgow Library section of the Templeton/Stoddard Design Library available to researchers. The first 25 of 70 boxes have been delivered to the Library Research Annexe for initial sorting. The plan is to have them all catalogued and accessible ready for the start of the 2010-11 academic year. The Library and Archive was jointly acquired from the liquidators by the University, Glasgow School of Art and Glasgow Museums with the generous support of the National Heritage Memorial Fund. Custody of the book collection will be shared with Glasgow School of Art.
The Templeton/Stoddard Design Library, in its role of supporting the design process of a leading carpet manufacturer, is a rich source of material in the areas of carpet design, textile design, and interior design. Its collections were formed from the mid-nineteenth century up to the early twenty-first century. Templeton’s, in particular, throughout most of its existence, was alive to contemporary developments in design and a good proportion of its material, especially from the 1880s to the 1930s was acquired from France and Germany as well as Britain. It constitutes a valuable resource for research in the history of design and contains a rich collection of visual material, much of it in colour, which can serve as inspiration for contemporary design students.
Anyone wishing to discuss how the Templeton/Stoddard Library and Archive might be used to support their research and teaching in 2010-11 should contact Richard Bapty, the Subject Librarian for History of Art.
