GUAS archivist’s update from Malawi

Alistair Tough, (the NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde archivist and a GUAS staff member)  is spending 4 months at Chancellor College in Zomba, Malawi. He is helping to prepare a Masters degree course that will train archivists and records managers.  Whilst in Malawi Alistair is acting as a facilitator for Records Management workshops for District Commissioners and a range of other public sector staff.  Alistair is accompanied by his wife Yvonne Tough who is supporting the National Archives in developing their archive appraisal and records retention scheduling techniques and processes.  Together Alistair and Yvonne are writing a workbook on appraisal and retention scheduling for the degree course.  They have their 2 year old son Alec with them.

Alistair has agreed to give regular updates on his progress in Malawi.  The following message was sent last week:

Yvonne, Alec and I are enjoying living and working in Zomba, Malawi.  The people smile a lot and are very friendly – but the driving is dreadful!  I am feeling both pleased and relieved as the stage has been reached where I am writing up workbooks.  Now all that is required is for the degree course to begin and some students to  enroll.

The photo shows me at work in the National Archives of Malawi.  At this time of year it is an exceptionally pleasant place to be, on  account of the perfume coming from the bride’s blossom shrub outside.
