John Nichol, first Regius Professor of English Language and Literature
Today 28 members of the Bowling Green University delegation of graduate students visited the University of Glasgow and were amazed to discover that it was a Glasgow Professor, John Nichol, who is credited with establishing the subject of American Literature with his groundbreaking book American Literature: An Historical Sketch, 1620 to 1880 published in 1882.
The students, who are on a study tour in Scotland, had an afternoon of informative presentations on the University of Glasgow past and present. Lesley Richmond from Archive Services provided a short overview of the history of the University with a North American theme. More information on John Nichol can be found on the University Story.
